Eira's sire, Eyarth Tayma

It was an extremely windy day, the day we had chosen to visit the Hilin Stud on our trip to Wales.... the morning news lady proclaimed in her accented voice "gale force winds across Wales today". That was an understatement.

The Hilin Stud is located in truly the most spectacular location -- on the hills of north Wales, overlooking a most magnificent lake.
The road to the farm curves through the hills, winding between ancient stone fences, until you finally end up at the beautiful old
farm house, which is situated just past the stone barns.

The Evans family are the most gracious hosts you could ever imagine, and made us feel ever so welcome on such a cold and windy day.
Dewi kindly took us across his farm in his Land Rover, while we eagerly peered from the windows at various groups of beautiful ponies.
In most of the pastures, we got out of the Land Rover and walked among the ponies, discussing each along with the pedigree.
We entered one pasture, and by that time the winds were so very strong that it felt as if we were going to be blown off the mountainside.
Dewi would shout to me "Bentick!" "Tayma!" "Charmer!" -- identifying each mare by her sire.

A particular dapple grey mare had approached me. She had the largest kindest eyes, the most exquisite head, the most perfect conformation.... Dewi pointed at her and shouted "Tayma!" I made a mental note.... I'd love to have a baby by Tayma...
The beautiful mare followed me around the field, politely at my elbow every time I turned around. I could not help but reach out and touch such beauty....

As we turned to leave the field I turned for one last look at the lovely mare..... but OH! It wasn't a mare at all....
it was EYARTH TAYMA himself!!!

When we returned to the barns, we were shown each of the ponies. I walked up to the first stall to look inside. A lovely grey mare put her head over the door, but then came the most beautiful little face of a foal. A dun filly with the prettiest little blaze and the prettiest eyes. My first thought was "ohhhhhhhh, I want that!".... She was absolutely exquisite. I dared to ask about her and learned that she was entered in the Fayre Oaks sale. My heart lept. I knew I would bid on her -- how could I not take home such an exquisite filly?

She was taken out of the stall for us to see, and she put on a beautiful show for us. I was stricken with anxiety that somehow I would not be able to purchase her during the sale. It was very nerve wracking.

She was entered on the second day of the sale, which made it a little harder to sit through the first day. I had come to Wales to choose a filly, and I knew I wanted her, but what I didn't know was if she would go over my budget. I would have hated to pass up buying something alltogether because I was waiting on her. Stress!

Finally it was Saturday morning and I eagerly sought out the stall where the filly would be. Oh, there she was.... even more beautiful than I remembered.... and she was drawing a huge crowd. It seemed that every time I went to take another look, there was yet someone else asking questions and eying MY beautiful filly!

Talk about "sitting on pins and needles" -- that was me waiting for the filly to come into the ring. I've been to many many auctions throughout my life, but never has there been anything I wanted so badly!

It was finally her moment, and she entered the ring looking a hundred times more beautiful than she had in her stall. Her incredibly loooooong neck held her exquisite head that turned to look at the crowd quizzically. Then she posed for all of us -- four square, that long neck arched, ears forward.... and the bidding began. I couldn't look.

I thought I might die of a heart attack right there in Builth Wells, Wales. It certainly felt like it, as my heart felt like it was going to leap right out of my chest. I raised my hand to bid, and they did not see me. I waved my arm until finally my bid was taken -- the bids were coming fast and furious! Then it was between just me and someone else. I kept bidding. I was quite determined to own this exquisite creature.
Finally I was the last bid. I won. I showed my number and the woman in front of me turned to smile and say "Well done!"

It was quite a moment, one of the highlights of a very special trip!
